Nine and a half hours, three of them at 3,454 metres

Frankenstrasse, 9:20 am

Gray Line's coach starts in Zurich and reaches Lucerne between 9:20 and 9:30 am. You meet your guide on Frankenstrasse, in front of the McDonald's opposite the Tourist Information, a short walk from the station. From there the coach heads into the Bernese Oberland, with a 25-minute stop in Interlaken before it drops you at Lauterbrunnen.

Weighing up Jungfraujoch guided tours from Lucerne? This is the one that goes up the old way and gives you the most time at the top. Best of Switzerland runs its own Lucerne day in the opposite direction; the difference is set out below.

The cogwheel through Kleine Scheidegg

At Lauterbrunnen you board the train, and your guide rides it with you: about 100 minutes of cogwheel railway to the top. The Wengernalp line climbs through Wengen, the car-free village, to Kleine Scheidegg at 2,061 metres, the col under the Eiger's north face where the tour allows about ten minutes. Here you change to the Jungfrau Railway, whose line Adolf Guyer-Zeller sketched in a hotel room in 1893, for the tunnel through the Eiger and the Mönch.

From May to October every seat on that last train needs a CHF 10 reservation. The tour organises the train, so all you do is follow your guide at the change.

Three hours at the top

Three hours at the top is time enough to slow down. Alpine Sensation, the corridor opened for the railway's centenary, links the station to the Ice Palace and the Sphinx lift, and the tour gives each about a quarter of an hour. That leaves time for the Plateau, the snow terrace outside, and for a meal at your own cost: Aletsch Self, the à la carte Crystal, or Bollywood, an Indian self-service restaurant at 3,454 metres.

From the Sphinx terrace at 3,571 metres the Aletsch Glacier runs south for 22 kilometres. Guests say the guide knows exactly where the photographs are, so ask.

Down by the Eiger Express

You leave the summit by train to Eigergletscher, then change to the Eiger Express, the tricable gondola, for about 15 minutes down to Grindelwald Terminal, where the coach is waiting. Coming down by gondola saves time at the end of the day, and the north face is right beside the cabin. The coach then takes you back to central Lucerne for the evening.

Gray Line or Best of Switzerland from Lucerne?

Both keep a guide with the group. Gray Line goes up by cogwheel and gives you about three hours at the top, from a meeting point in town. The Best of Switzerland day from Lucerne goes up by the Eiger Express and guarantees at least two hours, from the coach park on Alpenquai, for $313 a person against $344 here. Choose Gray Line for the time at the top; choose Best of Switzerland if you want the gondola on the way up.

1. Frankenstrasse 1, Lucerne. Meet your guide by the coach at 9:20 to 9:30 am.
2. Interlaken, 25 minutes. A short stop on the way into the mountains.
3. Lauterbrunnen. Change from the coach to the cogwheel railway.
4. Cogwheel to the top, about 100 minutes. Up through Wengen, with a short stop at the col below the Eiger.
5. The summit, about 3 hours. Alpine Sensation, the Ice Palace, the Sphinx terrace and time of your own.
6. Eiger Express, about 15 minutes. Down from Eigergletscher to Grindelwald Terminal.
7. Back to Lucerne. The coach returns you to the centre in the evening.

What the fare covers and what it doesn't

Frankenstrasse 1, opposite the Tourist Information

Meet your guide in front of the McDonald's at Frankenstrasse 1, opposite the Tourist Information office by Lucerne station. The coach arrives from Zurich between 9:20 and 9:30 am, so be there by 9:15. The day starts and ends at the same place.

Hotel pickup is not included. If you have luggage, guests have kept it on the coach while they were on the mountain; ask your guide on the day.

Know before you go

• Be on time. The coach comes from Zurich and waits only briefly in Lucerne.
• Infants ride on laps. Strollers are fine; there are no infant seats.
• Health comes first. The day is not for anyone with heart problems or serious medical conditions.
• Moderate fitness. You walk through tunnels and on snow at 3,454 metres, so move slowly.
• A minimum group applies. If too few book, you are offered another date or a full refund.
• Not wheelchair accessible. Choose a day with accessible transport instead.
