Jungfraujoch FAQs
Fares, seat reservations, passes, the routes up, altitude, children and the weather at 3,454 metres. Choosing between Jungfraujoch guided tours? The answers below settle most of what you need first.
Three answers matter more than the rest. Does your fare put you on the station at the top? The helicopter flights never land, and the valley day from Zurich never goes up. Is the railway ticket in the price? It is on every guided day except the one from Grindelwald. And who is with you at the top: a guide, or nobody? Every tour card says all three.
How much does a Jungfraujoch tour cost?
Guided group days from Zurich, Lucerne and Interlaken run from $313 to $356 per person with the mountain railway in the fare. Private days start around $919 per person at the smallest group size, and helicopter flights are priced per aircraft from $1,433.
Is the railway ticket included in the tour price?
On every guided group day and private day here, yes. The exception is the Grindelwald guide day, which includes a seat reservation only; its listing prices the ticket at CHF 261.20 per person at full fare, so check your total before you book.
How long do you get at the top?
Best of Switzerland guarantees at least 2 hours, and Gray Line allows about 3. Jungfrau Railways' own ticket books your return train 3 hours after you arrive. The Keytours coach days give about 1.5 hours, plus time at the Sphinx and the Ice Palace.
Does a guide come up to the summit with you?
On the Best of Switzerland and Gray Line days, yes. On the Keytours coach days from Zurich and Geneva the guide rides the coach and the summit visit is self-guided. The railway's own ticket is unguided, so you find your own way up and around.
How high is the Jungfraujoch?
The station stands at 3,454 metres, the highest railway station in Europe. The Sphinx Observatory above it, reached by lift from the station, is higher still at 3,571 metres.
Do you need a seat reservation for the train up?
Yes, from 1 May to 31 October 2026, for the train between Eigergletscher and the Jungfraujoch. It costs CHF 10. Every guided day here includes it, and the Grindelwald guide day includes the reservation but not the ticket.
Does the Swiss Travel Pass cover the Jungfraujoch?
No. The Swiss Travel Pass is not a free ride to the top. Pass holders pay a reduced fare, which the railway's own fare calculator shows when you enter the pass; you still buy the ticket for the mountain section.
Does the Jungfrau Travel Pass include the Jungfraujoch?
No. The Jungfrau Travel Pass covers the region's railways, cableways and lake boats for 3 to 8 days, and gives you a discounted connecting ticket from Eigergletscher to the top, from CHF 89 between 1 May and 31 October 2026.
How do you get to the Jungfraujoch from Zurich?
By train to Interlaken Ost, about 2 hours 4 to 2 hours 15, then on to Grindelwald Terminal or Lauterbrunnen and up the mountain. Or take a coach day of 11.5 to 12 hours that includes everything, with a guide.
What should you wear at the top?
Winter clothes, in every month: a warm jacket, rubber-soled shoes and sunglasses. There is snow on the Plateau all year, and nothing to rent at the top.
Can children go up?
Yes, but the advice from Jungfrau Railways, quoted in the tour listings, is that children under 2 should not, because of pressure equalising and fluid intake. Older children go up on every tour here.
What if it's cloudy at the top?
The trains still run, and the Ice Palace and Alpine Sensation are indoors, but the view can be a whiteout. Check the summit webcam on the morning, and use the 24-hour free cancellation most tours carry if the forecast turns.
Do Jungfraujoch helicopter tours land at the top?
No. None of the helicopter flights here lands. The 42-minute flights pass the Eiger North Face and the Sphinx, while the 26-minute flight stays over Lake Thun and sees the peaks at a distance.
Can you cancel and get your money back?
Every tour here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before it starts. The exception is the 2-day tour from Zurich, which refunds only up to 3 full days before.
Which tour is best from Interlaken?
For a first visit, the guided Best of Switzerland day: 7 hours with a guide at the top. If you would rather go at your own pace, Jungfrau Railways' own return ticket from Interlaken Ost costs about the same and gives you 3 hours up there.
Is the Jungfraujoch worth it?
On a clear day, most travellers say yes despite the price. The cost is mostly the mountain railway, so the question comes down to the weather: book with free cancellation and check the forecast before you go.
What is there to do at the top?
The Sphinx Observatory terrace, the Ice Palace, Alpine Sensation, the Plateau and, in summer, the Snow Fun Park. There is a Lindt chocolate shop and four restaurants inside the station complex.
How long is the Eiger Express ride?
15 minutes from Grindelwald Terminal to Eigergletscher, at 2,320 metres, in cabins of 26 seats. Jungfrau Railways says the route is 47 minutes faster to the top than the old way through Kleine Scheidegg.
Which way do the tours go up?
Best of Switzerland rides up by the Eiger Express and comes down through Wengen. Gray Line goes up the cogwheel line through Kleine Scheidegg and comes down by the Eiger Express. Either way, you see both routes.
Can you do the Jungfraujoch from Lucerne in a day?
Yes. The coach days from Lucerne take 9.5 to 10 hours. By train, the direct Luzern-Interlaken Express reaches Interlaken Ost in about 1 hour 50, and you go up from there.
Is there a Jungfraujoch tour from Grindelwald?
Yes: a guided 5-hour day that meets at the clock inside Grindelwald Terminal, for up to 8 people. The ticket is extra, so add it to the fare when you compare.
Are there private tours?
Yes, from Zurich and from Interlaken, with hotel pickup and your own driver-guide. The fares are per person and fall as your group grows, and the size limits run from 7 to 15.
Is there a 2-day tour?
Yes, from Zurich, with a night in a 3-star hotel in Interlaken or Grindelwald, breakfast, and the summit on day 2. It refunds only up to 3 full days before the start.
Can you go from Geneva?
Yes. It is a 13-hour coach day with a self-guided visit at the top, back in Geneva around 8:30 pm.
Can you go from Bern?
Yes. A small-group day of 8.5 hours by public train meets at Bern station at 9:30 am, for up to 15 people, with a local guide.
Is the Jungfraujoch open in winter?
Yes, all year. The trains run through the winter, and the seat reservation is only compulsory from May to October. Dress for deep cold, and see the weather page for the months.
Is there food at the top?
Yes: Aletsch Self, Crystal, Pikantus Lounge and Bollywood, which serves Indian food, plus the Lindt shop. No tour here includes lunch, so budget for it or bring your own.
Can you walk on the glacier?
On the Plateau, yes, on packed snow. A marked path also leads out to the Mönchsjoch Hut, about 45 minutes each way in the warmer months, and it closes in bad weather.
Will the altitude affect you?
Some visitors feel short of breath or light-headed at 3,454 metres. Move slowly, drink water, and come down if you feel unwell. Several listings exclude people with heart problems or serious medical conditions.
Is the Jungfraujoch wheelchair accessible?
Most group coach days list themselves as not wheelchair accessible. A few private and small-group listings describe accessible transport, so ask the operator before you book.
Do you need a passport?
Not for the Jungfraujoch, which is inside Switzerland. You do need one for the Milan day on the Bernina line, which crosses the Italian border.
Is skip-the-line real on these tours?
No line is skipped at the summit. What the group days include is a reserved seat and priority boarding on the train, which saves the wait on the busy summer departures.
What is the Aletsch Glacier?
The Aletsch Glacier is the longest in the Alps: 22 kilometres long and up to 900 metres thick, according to Jungfrau Railways. You see it from the Sphinx terrace, running south from the station.
Is the Jungfraujoch a UNESCO site?
Yes. It lies inside the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage Site, along with the Aletsch Glacier below it.
Is the Grindelwald valley day a Jungfraujoch tour?
No. The popular Grindelwald, Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen day from Zurich stays in the valleys and never rides up. It costs less because it carries no mountain railway ticket.
How far ahead should you book?
In summer, a few days to a week: the reserved seats on the train fill on the busiest dates. Book with free cancellation, then decide on the forecast 24 hours before.
