At 3,454 metres it is cold in every month, and the cloud decides what you see. The weather will rarely stop your train, but it can hide the view you came for. If you are choosing a Switzerland Jungfraujoch tour, read the month you travel first.

What the weather does to a visit here

The railway runs in cloud, and most of the summit is indoors. The Ice Palace, Alpine Sensation and the 360° cinema do not depend on the weather. The Sphinx terrace and the Plateau do. In cloud the terrace can be a whiteout, with no view of the glacier at all.

What to do about it: check the Sphinx webcam on jungfrau.ch and the forecast the day before. The booked tours cancel free up to 24 hours ahead, so you can move your day. Jungfrau Railways also points out that when the valley is grey, you are often above the cloud at the top.

The Jungfraujoch month by month

January

Average high −9.5 °C, low −15.5 °C, and about 117 hours of sun. Seat reservations are optional. The ski season is on below, so the Eiger Express carries skiers in the morning. Days are short, so start early and plan to be down by the afternoon.

February

Average high −10.2 °C, low −16.3 °C, and about 122 hours of sun. The coldest month at the top. Wind on the Sphinx terrace makes it feel colder still. Reservations stay optional, and the ski season continues. Pack a hat, gloves and a warm layer.

March

Average high −8.6 °C, low −14.4 °C, and about 161 hours of sun. Sunshine rises by about a third on February. The Mönchsjoch Hut opens at the end of the month, but the path to it stays closed until mid-May.

April

Average high −6.3 °C, low −12 °C, and about 160 hours of sun. The Snow Fun Park zipline opens on 24 April. It is still deep winter at the top, so dress for it. Seat reservations are still optional until the end of the month.

May

Average high −2.1 °C, low −7.8 °C, and about 152 hours of sun. Seat reservations become mandatory on 1 May, at CHF 10. The Good Morning Ticket starts, with 20% off the first two trains. Sledging and skiing in the snow park open on 4 May.

June

Average high 1.7 °C, low −4 °C, and about 170 hours of sun. The average high passes freezing for the first time. The hut path is open. Book your reserved seat early for a summer weekend, and pack sunglasses for the glare off the glacier.

July

Average high 3.4 °C, low −2.1 °C, and about 181 hours of sun. Peak season for trains and seats. Take one of the first two trains, from 07:04 at Interlaken Ost, for 20% off with the Good Morning Ticket. You start down by 13:17.

August

Average high 3.5 °C, low −1.7 °C, and about 183 hours of sun. The warmest and sunniest month at the top. It is still below freezing at night, so bring a jacket, gloves and sunglasses. The snow park and the hut path are both open.

September

Average high 0.5 °C, low −4.7 °C, and about 175 hours of sun. Nearly as sunny as July, and a little colder. Seat reservations are still mandatory, and the snow park and hut path are open. A clear morning gives the longest views.

October

Average high −2.1 °C, low −7.4 °C, and about 145 hours of sun. The snow park closes on 18 October, and the hut path in mid-October. Seat reservations stay mandatory until 31 October. After that, the Good Morning Ticket stops too.

November

Average high −6.5 °C, low −11.8 °C, and about 106 hours of sun. Reservations are optional again. Railway sections close in turn for maintenance, so check the operating information for your date. The ski season opens on 21 November, and snow park rides are over.

December

Average high −8.7 °C, low −14.5 °C, and about 101 hours of sun. The fewest hours of sun in the year. The ski season is on, and the days are at their shortest, so go up in the morning and come down early.

The seasons, and which one you want

Pick summer, May to October, for the most to do: the snow park, the hut walk and the mildest days, with a reserved seat on every train. Pick August or September for the most sun. Pick winter for fewer day visitors on the last railway and the chance of hard, clear days, and dress for −15 °C. The seasons are set out for summer on summer tours and for winter on winter tours.

Best time of day

Go early. The first two trains leave Interlaken Ost at 07:04 and 07:34 and reach the top at 08:41 and 09:11. From May to October they come with the Good Morning Ticket's 20% discount, if you start down by 13:17.

At the top, look at the Sphinx first if it is clear, because cloud can build during the day. If it is already in cloud, walk the Ice Palace and Alpine Sensation first and go back out later.

In July and August the average daily high at the station is about 3.5 °C, and the average low is about −2 °C. On the hottest days it goes above freezing, but you still need a jacket.
