You cannot drive to the Jungfraujoch; every way up ends on a mountain railway. Whether you book a Jungfraujoch guided tours or go on your own ticket, the journey runs through Interlaken Ost. Here is how long it takes from each Swiss city, and what to do with a car.
Everything goes through Interlaken Ost
Interlaken Ost station is the gateway. From here the Bernese Oberland Railway climbs one of two valleys: to Grindelwald Terminal for the Eiger Express, or to Lauterbrunnen for the cogwheel line through Wengen. Both routes meet the Jungfrau Railway, the last line to the top. Jungfrau Railways times the fastest route at about 1 hour 30 minutes from Interlaken Ost.
So plan in two halves: your city to Interlaken Ost, then Interlaken Ost to the top. The second half is set out, leg by leg, on the routes page.
By train from Zurich, Lucerne, Bern, Basel and Geneva
Every big Swiss city has trains to Interlaken Ost. These are the journey times on a Saturday in late September 2026, from the Swiss timetable.

If you hold a Swiss Travel Pass, the trains to Interlaken are covered, and so are the trains on to Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren. You still pay for the mountain section, at a discount. How much each pass saves is on tickets and prices.
Interlaken Ost to the mountain, leg by leg
From Interlaken Ost, you change at least twice. On the Eiger Express route you ride the train to Grindelwald Terminal, the gondola to Eigergletscher, then the Jungfrau Railway. On the older route you ride to Lauterbrunnen, the cogwheel railway to Kleine Scheidegg, then the Jungfrau Railway.

From May to October your seat reservation fixes the time you board at Grindelwald Terminal or Kleine Scheidegg. Leave Interlaken Ost at least 30 minutes before it. In the same months the Good Morning Ticket takes 20% off the first two trains, which leave Interlaken Ost at 07:04 and 07:34.
Driving and parking below the mountain
If you drive, park below and take the train. Grindelwald Terminal has its own car park, right at the Eiger Express, open around the clock. Lauterbrunnen has a parking garage for the route through Wengen. For a day visit by car, Jungfrau Railways recommends the Park and Ride at Matten bei Interlaken, with a direct train connection.

Wengen and Mürren are car-free, so if you are staying there, your car stays in Lauterbrunnen. The villages are described on the Jungfrau region page.
A coach day instead of the trains
From Zurich or Lucerne, a coach day does the planning for you. You board once in the city, the guide handles every change and the reserved seats, and you come back to where you started. The cost is time: a coach day takes 11.5 to 12 hours from Zurich and 9.5 to 10 hours from Lucerne. From Geneva it is a 13-hour day, back around 8:30 pm.
Would rather not plan the trains?
The guided day from Zurich picks up at Sihlquai bus station, with a stop in Lucerne, and keeps a guide with you all the way to the top.
Arriving from outside Switzerland
The nearest big airports are Zurich, Geneva and Basel, with train links to them and to Bern every half hour. From Zurich airport, take the train towards Bern or Lucerne and change for Interlaken Ost. If you land in the morning, stay a night in Interlaken or Grindelwald and go up the next day, early.
From Milan, there is no day trip to the Jungfraujoch. The day tour sold from Milan runs on the Bernina line to St. Moritz, which is another railway and another mountain.
Step-free access to the top
The fastest route is barrier-free: Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald Terminal by train, the Eiger Express, then the Jungfrau Railway from Eigergletscher. If you use a wheelchair and want to travel through Kleine Scheidegg instead, you must book by phone in advance, so staff can help you on and off. One companion travels free for each wheelchair user. How do I get from Zurich to the Jungfraujoch?
Take the train to Interlaken Ost, about 2 hours 4 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. From there the route via the Eiger Express takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to the top.
Can I drive to the Jungfraujoch?
No, the last part is railway only. Drive to Grindelwald Terminal or Lauterbrunnen, park, and take the train from there.
Is the Jungfraujoch accessible by wheelchair?
Yes, by the fastest route: Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald Terminal, the Eiger Express and the Jungfrau Railway are barrier-free. Travelling via Kleine Scheidegg needs a phone booking in advance.
Can I visit the Jungfraujoch as a day trip from Milan?
Not in a day by coach. The day trip sold from Milan goes on the Bernina line to St. Moritz, a different railway, and never reaches the Jungfraujoch.
