Summer is when the Jungfraujoch is busiest and the most is open. From May to October the snow park runs, the path to the Mönchsjoch Hut opens, and every seat on the last railway is reserved. Before you book a Jungfraujoch guided tours, here is what the season changes.

Snow in July, sun on the glacier

The valleys may be at summer heat, but the top is still at 3,454 metres. MeteoSwiss's station on the Jungfraujoch records an average daily high of 3.4 °C in July and 3.5 °C in August, with lows below freezing. August is the warmest month, and it is also the sunniest, at about 183 hours of sun. Jungfrau Railways guarantees snow on the Plateau every day of the year.

Jungfrau Railways advises layers, a jacket, closed shoes, a hat, gloves and sunglasses even in midsummer. The glare off the glacier is strong, and the risk of snow blindness is real without sunglasses. Pack them even if the valley is warm when you leave. Month-by-month figures are on the weather page.

Seat reservations from 1 May to 31 October

From 1 May to 31 October 2026, you cannot ride the last railway without a reserved seat. It costs CHF 10 per person, children included, and it fixes your time up and down. It is the rule that shapes a summer day at the top.

Summer-only at the top

Two things at the summit exist only in the warmer months, and both need time. The Snow Fun Park sits on the glacier by the station. In 2026 the zipline runs from 24 April and the sledging, tubing and skiing from 4 May, all until 18 October. The zipline flies 330 metres over the ice for CHF 20 an adult.

The walk to the Mönchsjoch Hut, at 3,658 metres, takes about 45 minutes each way on a marked high-alpine path. Jungfrau Railways lists the trail as open from mid-May to mid-October, and it can close at any time for avalanche, crevasse or storm danger. You need good shoes and very good fitness. Plan the time. A two-hour stop covers the main sights. The Mönchsjoch Hut walk and the snow park need longer, so choose a tour or a ticket that gives you three hours or more. The one-day plan sets out how to fit it in.

Beating the midday trains

Summer trains fill up in the middle of the day. If you travel on your own, go early: the first two connections leave Interlaken Ost at 07:04 and 07:34, and reach the top at 08:41 and 09:11. On those trains the Good Morning Ticket gives you 20% off, from CHF 190.40, from 1 May to 31 October. You then start down by 13:17.

The coach days from Zurich and Lucerne arrive later in the morning, because they drive to Interlaken first. They hold your reserved seats, so you do not queue for a train. What they cannot do is get you to the top before the day visitors.

Summer days in the valleys

A summer trip is also the season for the valleys below. Trümmelbach Falls, inside the mountain above Lauterbrunnen, is open from early April to early November, with longer hours in July and August. The Schynige Platte cogwheel railway climbs from Wilderswil to an alpine garden. From Eigergletscher, the Eiger Trail runs down to Alpiglen in about 2 hours. If you want the snow park or the hut walk, pick a tour with three hours at the top. If you want the earliest start, go from Interlaken or Grindelwald.
