The railway's own ticket
This is the return fare, sold by Jungfrau Railways itself: the trains from Interlaken Ost to the Jungfraujoch and back, the reserved seat on the last section, and admission to the summit. There is no coach, no group and no guide. It suits the traveller who already sleeps in Interlaken, Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen and would rather spend the morning on the mountain than on a motorway.

Via Grindelwald or via Lauterbrunnen
You choose the valley when you book. Via Grindelwald, the Bernese Oberland Railway takes you to Grindelwald Terminal, and the Eiger Express gondola lifts you to Eigergletscher at 2,320 metres in 15 minutes. Jungfrau Railways puts the whole trip from Interlaken Ost this way at 1 hour 30 minutes. Via Lauterbrunnen, the train climbs the Wengernalp line through Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg, the slower and older way up.
Both routes end on the same train: the Jungfrau Railway from Eigergletscher, every 30 minutes, 26 minutes through the tunnel to the top. Your seat on it is reserved in the fare.
Three hours, then your booked train
Your return leaves three hours after you arrive. The signed circuit takes one to two hours: Alpine Sensation's corridor of railway history, the Ice Palace cut into the glacier in the 1930s, the lift that climbs 108 metres in 25 seconds to the Sphinx terrace, and the Plateau outside. That leaves time for lunch at Aletsch Self or Crystal and a stop at the highest Lindt shop in the world. The Snow Fun Park's zipline and sledging runs are not in the fare. Jungfrau Railways suggests six to eight hours for the whole trip from Interlaken.
What nobody hands you
With no guide, the day is yours to run. Guests' one complaint is the changes: which platform, which carriage, where to walk at Eigergletscher. Look up your route on the railway's timetable before you set off, and leave Interlaken Ost with time to spare. If you miss your booked train you can still travel up, but you lose the seat reservation on the last section and may wait for a train with room.
Nobody explains the view either. If you want the history and the names of the peaks, the guided day from Interlaken covers the same ground with a guide for $313 a person, against $327 for this ticket.

Book this if
You are staying in the Jungfrau Region, you are comfortable changing trains, and you want to go up when you like without a coach timetable or a group. It suits confident independent travellers, families who stop often, and anyone who wants three full hours at the top.
Book something else if
It is your first time in Switzerland and you want someone to handle the changes: the guided day from Interlaken costs about the same with a guide. Interlaken Ost, on your own
There is no meeting point and no guide: you start at Interlaken Ost station and board the train for the valley you booked. The ticket is on your phone, so charge it the night before.
Jungfrau Railways asks passengers to leave Interlaken Ost at least 30 minutes before the time on a seat reservation, because the reserved time is the boarding time higher up the mountain. Check which station your booked time refers to.
Know before you go
- There is no guide. Learn the route before you go: the changes are where travellers get lost.
- Keep to your booked train. Miss it and you can still travel, but you lose your reserved seat.
- The snow park costs extra. Its zipline and sledging runs are not in the fare.
- Food is on you. Eat at the summit restaurants, and bring water: the air up there dries you out.
- Dress for winter. Expect frost at the top in any month, and bring sunglasses.
- Check the weather camera. Look at the summit webcam in the morning; cloud can hide everything.
